So, it appears that these two are vying for the same spot on an early fall flight to ISS. I understand the financial backing behind Lance Bass, but who is potentially footing the bill for Lori Garver?

Incidentally, the press doesn't seem to have mentioned that she used to be the National Director of the National Space Society! Go girl!

So far from what I've read, she's scrambling for sponsors any way she can get them- mostly in the private sector. Apparently, she has even offered to film television commercials while in space. I've read one article that mentioned generically that she is also looking for grants in the public sector but didn't mention where that might come from- it seems unlikely that the government is going to chip in for something that NASA is so adamantly opposed to.

The other thing that Lance seems to have on Lori is that I haven't read anything yet about him having any negative results from his health exams/tests. Lori has apparently been told that she needs to have some gall stones taken care of and have a wisdom tooth removed.

Like the comedian/host of Comedy Central's faux news program "The Daily Show" said recently:

"We want to start a collection for sending Lance Bass into space.
We think we can make enough, because we only need to send him up, not bring him back."

Probably not the first time that was said or thought, but the idea does have merit.

But I guess getting up there is most of the cost. (Fuel cost and all.) Comming down I guess would be easy. Just fall. (Well, and some fuel for a deorbit burn.) Still, he doesn't have to come down in a *capsule*...

(I remember the old Doonsbury(sp?) cartoon from when John Denver was campaigning to go into space...this guy with a rifle runs outside, lies on his back, and points it up to the sky, while chanting madly; "I know he's up there somewhere...I know he's up there somewhere...")

Personally, I think Lance Bass could get a wider share of the public interested....

Those that are already intrerested don't need to be influenced in this manner....
