Well, I had an idea of an easy way to get space news out to folks without much work on my end (since slashdot style news seems to be more work then I'm willing to put in right now). I went ahead and threw it together and have called it the SEDS NewsWire. I hope it will be a catalyst for discussion about current events. I also hope that it will provide an advertising medium for chapters.

The idea is simple. Anyone posts a news article. It is reviewed, approved and automatically posted to a web page. At the same time it is also emailed to an open discussion list.

As far as advertising goes. The idea is that we are providing a service by organizing and delivering news headlines and providing a forum for discussion. Any chapter that has a fundraiser (selling t-shirts, etc.) or an announcement that they would like to make could add a blurb about it in the email that is sent every time a headline is added.

It is up at seds.org (follow the test link at the bottom). Please try it out and let me know what you think.

The link at the very bottom of www.seds.org that says "Test drive the new main page".

The newswire is actually partially integrated with the main SEDS page. The latest 5 articles are posted directly on the main page. You can click on the NewsWire header there or the more... link after the article list to get to the main NewsWire page.

I hope the newswire will mainly be accessed through the main SEDS page but the direct link is http://www.seds.org/newswire/index.html

You may also want to check with Alan Montgomery (Texas A&M) who has been maintaining a SEDSNEWS news group/listerv for eons. bit.listserv.seds-l

I've just subscribed to the listserv and don't see any messages at all. I'll try posting to it and see if I get a response.

No, I don't plan to redesign the main site. I was never very good with graphic design. I mainly wanted to clean it up a bit and add an element that was regularly changing so people know we're alive :)

Although I encourage anybody who would like to redesign the main site to go for it and post the site to the forums so we can all discuss it.

I think the only restrictions would be to keep the current links as part of the new site and to make it very accessible (I think the latest version of flash has accessibility functions). Perhaps a new main site could have more direct information about the national organization...

Well, I decided to kill the NewsWire for now. It was too much of a hassle for me. I was hoping some other folks would get involved but I've only gotten one legitimate article submission so far. Of course I didn't do any advertising whatsoever which probably has something to do with it. Anyway, I've still got everything sitting there if anybody is interested in taking it on. There's really nothing to it but for me it's just another thing to worry about. I was also a little disappointed that only 10 people have signed up for the email list.

I took another look at compiling slashcode over this weekend but gave up in frustration again. Its way too particular about its webserver requirements, but not detailed in actually attaining them.

I'd still of course like to get it going, but not just yet...

Good news!

Duane Dunkerson of www.thespaceguy.com has volunteered to take over administration of the SEDS NewsWire. He's been posting articles for a few days now and I've restored the NewsWire to the SEDS mainpage and the email list is back up and running.

Cool deal. Do you mind if we transition the email list to mailman? I'm trying to phase-out majordomo.

Actually I am using mailman for the newswire list.
The rest of the lists on SEDS could certainly be transitioned tho.

OK - saw the old majordomo list and confused it. You must have it as an unadvertised list. I'm working on the transition of the rest of the lists.

Oh yeah, sorry 'bout that. Hadn't removed the old list and the new one is unadvertised. It wasn't at first but within a few days it seemed there was already spam to the list.

Hi,
I want to add the newswire to Israel SEDS site - how can I do that?
