Hi there everyone,
Just to let everyone know, UK-SEDS is alive and well... our annual conference takes place in a little over a week's time - more info below. We will add to this thread with reports, photos etc. after the event!
==========
Hi all,
Yes, it's that time of year again... the UKSEDS annual space conference is upon us once more! The 2001 conference follows the normal format of previous events, including a program of lectures, some exploring the conference theme and others about UKSEDS activities and general space issues; an exhibition featuring stands from companies and institutions; a schools workshop with hands on activities and mini-lectures, and social events.
The conference gives people a chance to get together and share their enthusiasm for space, so make the most of the lectures and exhibition in the daytime and then party at night. We hope you will all have a great time in Newcastle and maybe take some time to explore the city.
Subject to final confirmation, the key speaker at this year's UKSEDS Conference will be Sergei Krikalev, crew member of Expedition One, the first crew to the International Space Station. Cosmonaut Krikalev logged hundreds of hours on Mir and the Space Shuttle before taking the first step into the next phase of human space exploration. There is an online biography at http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/Bios/htmlbios/krikalev.html
The Conference will take place at University of Newcastle on 10th and 11th November 2001. The theme of this year's conference is 'Moon on a Stick; get a handle on space'. The theme reflects the changes in the space industry from the "moon on a stick" being an idiom of unattainable goals, a dream, into real opportunities for tourism, industry, medicine, science and technology, even colonisation. These activities are now within our technical capability, and can only continue and develop through increased education, awareness, and support.
The Conference is an official Science Year event and the complete lecture timetable and exhibitor list is online at http://www.spacebucket.net/conference. Further information about UKSEDS itself can be found at http://www.uk.seds.org
Cheers,
Mark
