A SYMPOSIUM HONORING
BYRON TAPLEY’S 50 YEARS OF CONTRIBUTIONS
TO AEROSPACE EDUCATION, RESEARCH, AND SERVICE
The year 2008 marks 50 years of distinguished contributions to aerospace education, research and service by Professor Byron D. Tapley, Clare Cockrell Williams Centennial Chair in Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin. To recognize this milestone, a one day technical/scientific symposium will be held in Austin, Texas, on Friday, February 1, 2008. The many students and colleagues of Prof. Tapley are encouraged to participate. The symposium is scheduled after the AAS/AIAA Spaceflight Mechanics Meeting to be held in Galveston, Texas, January 27-31, 2008. The symposium will conclude with a banquet Friday evening for participants and their guests. A bound volume of peer-reviewed papers will be produced.
The symposium will provide an opportunity for both oral and published papers containing original research. The schedule for proposed presentations and papers is given below. Because of limited time available, proposed presentations will be selected by a review committee but the presentations are expected to cover a potentially diverse range of science and engineering. Authors who wish to submit a paper for publication only (no oral presentation) are encouraged. All papers for publication will be peer-reviewed according to normal practices of scholarly research publication.
Papers are sought to reflect the diverse research interests of Prof. Tapley, including:
Orbital mechanics
Satellite orbit determination
Earth satellite applications
Satellite remote sensing
Please note the following schedule:
Abstract deadline: December 3, 2007 (500 words)
Author notification: December 15, 2007
Final papers: February 28, 2008
The timing of this symposium has been coordinated with the Spaceflight Mechanics Meeting in Galveston and participants are encouraged for both meetings. Transportation between Galveston and Austin includes automobile (<4 hours) and <45 min Southwest Airlines (from Houston Hobby, HOU, to Austin, AUS). The Symposium will be held at the Center for Space Research (CSR), 3925 W. Braker Lane, Austin, Texas. Hotel and registration information will be available with the next circular and information will be posted at the CSR web site:
http://www.csr.utexas.edu
Please forward abstracts to the Symposium Steering Committee:
Bob E. Schutz, schutz@csr.utexas.edu
George H. Born, george.born@colorado.edu
Thomas J. Eller, ellertj@aol.com
This symposium is sponsored by The University of Texas at Austin Cockrell School of Engineering and the American Astronautical Society (http://www.astronautical.org) (AAS).
