Canadian Space Summit 2007 Highlights Western Canadian Space Efforts

The 2007 Canadian Space Summit will be held at the University of Calgary (Alberta, Canada) on November 17th and 18th, 2007.

This exciting annual event brings together space organizations and space enthusiasts from across Canada for a weekend of speakers, entertainment and workshops that promote communication and collaboration between groups and allow individuals and groups to present their work to the wider Canadian space community.

With the theme of Powering the Drive to Space, this two day Summit will feature guest speakers from across Canada as well as a few select speakers from around the world. It will celebrate past milestones, showcase current knowledge, and contemplate future directions. This year is also the first time the Summit has been held in western Canada and will particularly highlight the accomplishments of space groups and institutions working in western Canada who are building on the legacy and traditions of exploration and pioneering spirit.

Two of the eight speakers for this year’s event are already confirmed and further speakers will be announced soon on the Summit website: www.css.ca/summit.

Dr. Jaymie Matthews is the Principal Investigator of MOST (Microvariability & Oscillations of Stars), Canada’s first space telescope, which is searching for exosolar planets. Dr. Matthews hails from Vancouver, BC where he is a professor at the University of British Columbia.

Dr. Pat Côté is a Senior Research Officer at the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics, Victoria, BC where he conducts research on stellar and galactic dynamics, dark matter, and galaxy formation using the Hubble Space Telescope.

The Summit will be attended by representatives of local and national space interest groups from across Canada including the Canadian Space Agency, the Canadian Space Society, Mars Society Canada, and the Canadian Space Chamber of Commerce, as well as a large number of students from the University of Calgary, the University of Alberta and other Canadian universities. It provides these groups the opportunity to inform the Canadian space community of current efforts and successes while promoting collaboration on future projects. It also gives everyone, especially students, a wonderful opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences with eminent scientists working in space-related fields.

The 2007 Summit is being organized by an assembly of space related organizations including SEDS-Canada, the Calgary Space Workers Society (CSWS), the Calgary Space Frontier Society (CSFS), and the Canadian Space Society (CSS). This upcoming Summit promises to recreate the exciting academic and social atmosphere of years past.

Registration is now available at the conference website, www.css.ca/summit. Registration can be made online via Paypal, or alternatively, by printing the pdf registration form and mailing it in. Registration will also be accepted at the door, and you will not be subject to any late registration fees provided that you let us know ahead of time that you will be attending.

Yes, this is annual.

It is essentially the conference where the public can come in and learn about what is happening in the space community. Also, it is the time and place where all the space groups get to meet each year. Like Sedsic, but national, and generally much smaller.
